Members and Coaching
The BEEs welcome new members.
Some of our most recent members are new to boccia and learning the game, others have joined for additional practice. Our more experienced members play in regional and national competitions and represent England at international level.
We welcome players of any age who are able to concentrate and focus on playing the game whilst seated (most players bring their own wheelchairs).
Meet some of the players:-
- Beth is one of The BEEs founder members, she has played boccia for nearly 8 years and now competes at national level in school and community league fixtures. Recently she was selected for the Boccia England Talent Sqad. Her aim is to represent GB in 2016 or 2020.
- David joined the BEEs 3 years ago when he was first selected for England, initially this was for extra practice but now as an experienced player he brings a wealth of knowledge to the sessions and shares this with other members. David hopes to represent BG in Rio.
- Owen began coming to the club 2 years ago and has developed his skills dramatically, he competed in his first regional competition in 2012.
The club thrives and as players get older the age limit has been revised. The BEEs now welcome players of all ages to join.
Experienced Coaches and Equipment Provided
All our coaches have taken the accredited Boccia England Coach Award and Referee's Certificate. In addition within the club there are National Referees and Classifiers.
Boccia is played with special boccia balls and for those unable to propel or kick a ball we have ramps. Coaches help each individual athlete develop a method of releasing the ball independently. The club provides all equipment and for those athletes competing in competition will loan out equipment for the player to practice outside of club.
National Young Coaching Academy
The first NYCA was run by the Youth Sports Trust in 2012. Beth was selected for the programme and met up with 14 other young boccia coaches for specific coach training which was theoretical and practical over 2 long weekends. She was joined at The BEEs by 2 other young coaches, Felicity and Alice, in order to complete their practical training. We are delighted that Felicity and Alice have decided to continue to volunteer at the club.
